Umbrella (Excess Coverage) Policy
for Restaurants and Caterers

Some eating establishments choose to boost their underlying policies with additional coverage limits. Called "umbrella policies" or "excess coverage," umbrella protection adds more liability insurance, in increments of $1 million, on top of the coverage limits of basic general liability, hired and non-owned auto liability and employer's liability coverage included with workers' compensation policies. You can easily add an umbrella liability policy to all three underlying policies for a single premium.

For restaurants and catering businesses, Business Insurance Now offers umbrella limits up to $5 million, as long as minimum limits of $1 million are carried on underlying general liability, hired and non-owned auto and employer's liability policies. Some states may require that all three coverages are in place before an umbrella policy can be purchased.

What Umbrella Policies Cover

Umbrella liability insurance gives your business additional coverage when a claim exceeds an underlying policy's insurance limits. For example, if a visitor to your restaurant is injured and your general liability policy provides $1 million in coverage, but your claim settlement calls for $1.5 million, your umbrella policy would cover that additional half-million dollars.

Umbrella Insurance Tips

  • For many small businesses, the largest liability exposure stems from auto accidents. Bodily injury claims in such cases can run into the millions, making umbrella insurance a sound investment.
  • Umbrella liability insurance can also help cover large general liability claims related to food contamination or food allergies – both common risks in the restaurant or catering business.
  • If you're not sure what coverage limits are appropriate for your business, contact the food service business insurance experts at Business Insurance Now for a free risk assessment.
