Spam emails causing problems for businesses

Published:

A recent survey conducted by GFI Software found 44 percent of respondents believe their company has seen security breaches due to spam email, while 72 percent said they receive too much spam email.

Many spam emails come from computer hackers who embed links in these emails that, if clicked, can spread a computer virus. Due to security concerns such as spam and phishing, all businesses need a professional liability insurance policy, which defends companies from financial fallout caused by cybercrime.

"This research shows that the spam problem is not going away, and in fact, the delivery of malicious links and files makes it more dangerous than ever before," said Phil Bousfield, general manager of the infrastructure business unit at GFI. "Businesses need to respond by taking advantage of all the latest spam-fighting technologies available to them."

Helping businesses combat these cybercrime efforts is Visa, which is offering a set of tips for businesses and consumers to fight off phishing.

A few security tips provided by Visa include scanning all emails that ask for personal or payment information, using spam-blockers and keeping antivirus software up to date.
