Small businesses in need of emergency training

In the wake of the several recent natural disasters affecting the U.S., the Advertising Council, along with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the American Red Cross, are launching a new line of PSAs to help businesses with disaster preparation.

The Insurance Information Institute recently released a report that found 40 percent of businesses affected by a disaster close permanently. Thus, the importance of being fully prepared for disasters is highly important for businesses of all sizes.

Within the workforce, small businesses represent 99 percent of all employers. When it comes to disaster recovery and preparation, small and mid-sized businesses are the most vulnerable, according to the Ad Council, who conducted a survey within in this sector. Nearly two-thirds of respondents from these small businesses stated that they do not currently have an emergency plan in place. The aforementioned organizations will aim to reduce this figure significantly through their collective help.

"Businesses small and large make up the backbone of economies in communities across our country," said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. "Putting a disaster plan in motion now will improve the likelihood that businesses and organizations will not only survive and recover themselves, but also help their neighbors and communities recover more quickly."

One helpful piece of advice for businesses is to have information stored in an offsite space. Thus, if a disaster affects a businesses' physical location, they can still access their data, and avoid potential professional liability lawsuits later.
