Preliminary settlement between Norwich City Council and local businessman construction dispute

Published:

Architects that are planning developments next to other companies must be aware their construction efforts may cause harm to local businesses which may be covered under professional liability insurance. For instance, major construction may cause areas to be blocked off which can lower the sales of businesses.

In Norwich, Connecticut, Thayer Marine and RV owner Richard Thayer Sr. filed a lawsuit against the Norwich City Council which was approved in a preliminary agreement on Monday.

According to the complaint, Thayer's business was experiencing significant losses as a result of the city's construction of a multi-million dollar transportation complex adjacent to his business. The development of the property has made it difficult for potential customers to visit Thayer's business and dust accumulation from the construction site has harmed his boats.

Mayor Peter Nystrom told the Norwich Bulletin that she supports Thayer's business and believes it will continue to thrive.

"When you look at the opportunities in Norwich and with a new owner across the street (at the marina), I think he's in a great location, and I certainly support him being a part of our community for as long as he's able to," Nystrom stated to the news source. "He has access to a market that will be growing."
