Palo Alto library architect faces potential lawsuit

Published:

Plans to renovate Palo Alto's Mitchell Park Library and Community Center have hit a snag as a result of increasing costs and potential miscalculations on behalf of the architect, Palo Alto Online reports.

The city council will decide if the errors should amount to legal action. Errors and omissions insurance is available to companies, which insures for such mistakes, and this is especially beneficial for major architectural projects.

Initially, the council granted an additional $3.7 million for the project, as well as a 20 percent contingency cap for unforeseen construction expenses, however the renovations are behind schedule. As a result, the council has planned a closed-door meeting to consider a lawsuit and solution, the news source reports.

Upon hearing of the construction delays, Molly Stump, city attorney, and the council requested monthly project reports. According to the news source, eight changes to the project have already been approved, which would result in an extra $1 million in expenses for the project.

Although the operation may be off-schedule, the news source suggests that the total cost of renovations remains $8 million below the head engineer's initial estimate at the halfway point.
