More small businesses "ruralsourcing"

According to a recent Business Insider article, more small businesses are "ruralsourcing" - meaning outsourcing work to rural American communities, rather than abroad to countries such as China and India.

Using data from oDesk, an online employment platform, the news source determined that rural employees are outperforming workers in urban areas in terms of online work activity and hours worked per contractor, the source says.

The oDesk data showed that towns with populations under 15,000 have a proportionally higher number of people actively working online. The group worked more than 175 hours in January - more than seven times the hours worked by contractors in Los Angeles.

"Workers in small towns need access to jobs, and the Internet can put them in consideration for job opportunities on a global scale," said oDesk CEO Gary Swart.

Though outsourcing work can be an excellent solution for dealing with heavy or unmanageable workloads, outsourcing may also potentially come with its own problems. Having employees off-site can sometimes lead to miscommunication and errors in the work produced. Small business owners who frequently outsource work may benefit from protecting their companies with professional liability insurance, should an error occur.
