Law firm sued for divorce settlement

A law firm in Rockland, Indiana, was recently sued by a former client who alleges the company was negligent in its actions regarding her lawsuit in 2009.

The plaintiff claims Strout & Payson failed to discover the full extent of her marital assets, and as a result, advised her to settle for no child or spousal support.

The suit states the law firm assured the plaintiff it would thoroughly investigate all the assets of her marriage, which included a cafe and two pieces of real estate. However, the plaintiff claims the law firm advised her the debts of her marriage would be greater than her assets, and the best resolution would be for her to eliminate the debt resulting from her business and real estate.

As a result of the law firm's advice, the plaintiff settled for no support and effectively gave all of her marital assets to her husband.

The lawsuit seeks punitive damages against the law firm as well as other unspecified damages.

The suit highlights the importance of companies following through on their professional liability with every client, lest they be brought to court for failing to do their duty.
