Dentist sued in professional liability lawsuit

Published:

A North Carolina-based dentist was recently found guilty in a malpractice lawsuit that was settled for $300,000.

The plaintiff, Lauren Barber, sued the dentist, Ilias Haralambakis, for negligence and battery after he apparently removed more teeth than both parties had agreed to.

Haralambakis was only supposed to remove nine of Barber's teeth during their February 14, 2007 appointment. However, the dentist removed 15 teeth without her consent. During the trial, Barber's representation relayed that, because of the event, she can no longer eat certain foods. Also, she must now wear dentures to replace the pulled teeth.

Dental implants would cost Barber more than $83,000, which she can now afford because of the settlement. The presiding judge, Orlando Hudson, had left the settlement amount up to the jury.

Initially, Hudson had told the jurors that medical professionals do not need to be held to standards of perfection. However, the jury still felt the defendant was guilty of the suggested actions.

In addition to the professional liability charges, Haralambakis was also guilty of harming the patient, meaning Barber was entitled to punitive damages as well.
