Dentist loses license, faces further discipline over accident

Recently, Wesley Meyers, a dentist in Winter Park, Florida, handed in his license after a patient of his died as a result from a medical accident.

Four years ago, Meyers accidentally dropped a tool into the throat of his patient, Charles Gaal, who later died as a result of a subsequent surgery to retrieve the item. Meyers had not been practicing during the last several years, however, increased criticism regarding his treatment of Gaal brought him before the Florida Board of Dentistry. While the board has the ability to revoke his license, Meyers did so voluntarily.

The event took place in May 2007 and Gaal died in June of that year. Meyers was then fined $17,000 by the Dentistry Board in 2008, in addition to another $10,000 to cover the state's investigation. However, Gaal's children did not let the case go, and sued the dentist for professional liability in 2010.

During the lawsuit, Meyers' former assistant, Betsy Estes, testified that she had accidentally dropped the tool into Gaal's throat. Despite the admittance, the board still felt revoking Meyers' license to be the best course of action.
