Delay in Louisiana fire station construction sparks lawsuits

In Louisiana, two lawsuits were filed because of the construction and delayed unveiling of the Bourg Volunteer Fire Department's new station, reports.

The $1.3 million building is twice the size of the prior firehouse and has expanded living quarters and training facilities for firefighters.

Initially, construction was projected to complete by March of 2011, but a pair of conflicting lawsuits by the fire station and Devier Design Build of Mandeville have caused further delay.

The fire station claims that Devier Design build failed to pay its subcontractors and didn't supervise or direct the work, resulting in a lien. While Devier has filed a lawsuit against the building's architect, Houston Lirette Jr., claiming he was unprepared which led to errors and delays in construction.

"Lirette caused delays and uncertainties in the progress of the work, preventing Devier from completing the project timely and caused added costs to Devier," Devier's lawsuit claims.

With cases involving negligence, and whoever it is that's at fault, companies can ensure their legal costs are covered through errors and omissions insurance.

Fire District Board Chairman Nolan Bergeron told the news source that his station is attempting to resolve the issue honorably.
