Use March Madness to bring the firm together

Published:

Many firm owners will invest in small business insurance as a means of protection from disgruntled employees who may sue the company. However, small-business owners are always looking to improve morale around the firm, and with March Madness right around the corner, it is the perfect time to begin discussing an office pool.

Respondents were asked, "Do you feel March Madness (NCAA basketball tournament) activities in the workplace, such as watching games or participating in pools that don't involve money, have a positive or negative impact on employee morale?" Twenty percent of respondents said it would be good for the firms, while only 9 percent of managers believe such activities can potentially bring down the effectiveness of their staff members.

"It's often better for managers to acknowledge the appeal of events like March Madness and provide opportunities for their staff to enjoy the festivities rather than ignore them," said Robert Hosking, executive director of OfficeTeam. "Employees need a chance to bond with coworkers over shared interests. Group activities - whether based on the NCAA basketball tournament or other events - provide a channel for team building."

If small-business owners can find a way to unite their teams, they should because when workers enjoy each other's company, processes at the firm can run more smoothly. While embracing March Madness can be a solid strategy for management at smaller firms, decision makers must put some parameters in place to ensure productivity isn't lost. A few considerations for small-business owners include creating rules for internet use in the office, setting aside time for employees to watch the games and asking employees to submit time-off requests far in advance.
