Survey looks at scope of potential data breach issues

Published:

Cibecs recently teamed up with IDG to create the 2012 Business Data Loss Survey, which outlined how businesses are currently protecting and backing up data, the effects of bring-your-own-device policies and the impact of data loss in the past year.

According to the survey, 30 percent of respondents value their data or their computer at more than $25,000, showcasing the importance of investing in a cyber liability insurance policy that can keep a business afloat if data loss occurs and leads to financial fallout.

"In 2011 over 50 percent of the 250 companies surveyed had lost business critical data," said Richard Dewing, CEO of Cibecs. "Even more concerning was that 10 percent of companies stated they would not be able to recover business data if lost – while 37 percent estimated that business data recovery in their organization would take a day or longer."

Sixty percent of survey respondents reported that they use laptops as their primary system. With the rise of enterprise mobility, companies would be wise to look into comprehensive mobile device security management, rather than simply relying on antivirus programs and other traditional means of cyberdefense.
