SMB security spending to surpass $5 billion

Published:

According to a newly released report from International Data Corporation, small and medium-sized businesses will spend nearly $6 billion on security technology in 2015.

Security solutions have become more important in recent years as the advent of mobile workers and cloud computing have become a bigger part of the infrastructure for SMBs.

"Small and medium-sized businesses have as much need for information technology as much larger companies," said Charles Kolodgy, vice president of security products at IDC. "They also require security because they are a target of cybercriminals. But there are unique issues that prevent SMBs from just buying what large enterprises purchase."

The report found endpoint, messaging, network, web, identity and access management, and security and vulnerability management solutions all increased in popularity in recent years, while SMBs worked to improve security.

Small businesses rely on a number of different technologies to supplement their growth, such as their website, the cloud and channel support, which are just a few of the reasons security technology is becoming more necessary. Supplementing that technology for businesses is cyber liability insurance, which can protect a business if sensitive information is lost or stolen despite its security apparatus.
