Small businesses need to be prepared for all kinds of emergencies

Published:

According to recent research from Sage North America, 61 percent of surveyed small businesses do not have a formal emergency or disaster preparedness plan in place, while nearly all small firms back up their critical financial data.

Preparing for anything is important for small businesses due to the unpredictability of the business market. The Small Business Disaster Preparedness Study found 30 percent of respondents haven't even considered preparing for an unexpected crisis.

"Backing up on-site may not be sufficient to protect small businesses from natural disasters -  particularly if the business is located in an area prone to earthquakes, hurricanes, fires or flooding - or more common crises, such as theft or hardware malfunction," said Connie Certusi, executive vice president and general manager of Sage Small Business Accounting Solutions.

Backing up financial data is very important to many small businesses, but they can improve upon their strategies. The survey found of the 88 percent of respondents that back up their financial data, only 16 percent use onsite and offsite methods.

Data backup is necessary for nearly all small businesses, as disasters can happen at any time, and that includes natural disasters. By protecting the possessions of the business with property insurance, owners will know they are covered in the case of a catastrophic event.
