Small business owners less aware of data security practices than C-suite executives

Published:

According to recent research from information security company Shred-it, C-suite executives are more in tune with protecting their critical information and data security than small business owners.

The survey revealed 61 percent of C-suite executives at larger organizations have a management-level employee responsible for overseeing the company's data security, while 46 percent of small business owners have placed no one in charge of these roles.

"Security breaches within small businesses are on the rise as more small business owners continue to become technologically-savvy and use computerized systems and digital records to track their customer and financial information," said Mike Skidmore, privacy and security officer at Shred-it. "As small companies evolve as a business, so must their information security measures."

Eighteen percent more C-suite executives were also found to be aware of the legal requirements for storing, keeping and disposing of confidential data than small business owners were, the report said.

With the Shred-it survey finding larger organizations are placing more importance on data security, small business owners should consider purchasing cyber liability insurance to protect its critical information from computer hackers.
