Sacramento: The worst city for small businesses

Published:

Tough economic times are making many cities throughout the United States a rough environment for their local small businesses. According to research from Thumbtack.com and the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, Sacramento is currently the worst city in the country for small business friendliness.

"It's clear that Sacramento is failing in the eyes of its small businesses," said Sander Daniels, co-founder of Thumbtack. "For policymakers at every level looking for ways to jump-start economic growth and job creation, Sacramento can serve as a case study of what not to do."

California's state capital earned failing scores in nine categories including employment, regulations, licensing and zoning, while its best grade was a C-minus in the category of employee training programs.

Throughout the study, the two entities surveyed 6,022 small businesses nationwide.

While all small business owners need to be insured in the event problems arise, owners in Sacramento and other cities that scored low in this study should be extra cautious if they don't have insurance, since they may already be stretched thin due to lack of municipal support or resources. By purchasing small business insurance, business owners in the city can be protected should unexpected circumstances arise.
