Report: Risky behavior more dangerous online than in real world

Published:

A new study released by Webroot found risky online behaviors are thought to be more dangerous than offline behaviors such as leaving a home unlocked or not wearing a seatbelt while driving.

Some of the results from the survey showed that respondents believe making a credit card purchase from an unknown website is more risky than sharing personal information over the phone, while an email attachment from an unknown sender is more dangerous than arranging a meeting with a stranger from the internet.

"It is encouraging to see that people are aware of the risks posed by online threats," said Jacques Erasmus, chief information security officer for Webroot. "Today's internet users share an increasing amount of personal information online, and cybercriminals target security loopholes and careless practices to carry out everything from credit fraud to identity theft."

By highlighting just how risky certain online behaviors are, the report highlights the importance of purchasing cyber liability insurance for businesses that rely heavily on the internet, especially those that store sensitive customer data online.
