Police officers in Virginia file motion for lack of overtime pay

Recently, several police officers in Richmond, Virginia, filed a class-action lawsuit against the region's Police Department, claiming it failed to adequately pay them overtime wages.

In all, 73 officers took part in the suit, which seeks back pay for the overtime hours worked. While no exact amount was specified in the suit, the plaintiffs' attorney relayed "it's a substantial amount."

According to the attorney, a majority of the plaintiffs still work as city officers. Overall, 69 of the officers claim the Richmond Police Department violated federal law, while all 73 feel it broke state law by failing to pay overtime wages.

The lawsuit states the department did not issue adequate payment for any hours the officers worked beyond 171 in a 28-day cycle. In addition, the suit alleges the department violated a 2005 state law by failing to properly pay the workers for all hours worked in their standard 28-day cycle.

The case highlights the importance of installing and adhering to proper business practices. Failure to do so may spark controversy and result in expensive professional liability lawsuits as well as reputational damage.
