Online file sharing seen as risky business for SMBs

Published:

Services such as cloud computing have allowed small and medium-sized businesses the ability to send data and business critical information over the internet, but these services also have their security risks.

According to recent research from Symantec, many SMB employees are deploying unmanaged use of online file sharing solutions without permission from their IT department.

"As the fastest adopters of cloud technologies, such as file sharing, SMBs need to use safe practices, especially when using a solution that might not be built for businesses," said Rowan Trollope, group president of SMB and cloud for Symantec. "As employees increasingly adopt consumer cloud services at work, the risk to SMBs only grows."

The survey also found file sharing allows employees to experience improvements in productivity with 74 percent saying they they work better when they can share, while 61 percent of respondents said employees are somewhat to extremely influential when it comes to adopting file sharing solutions.

While online file sharing can helps employees carry out business, security concerns can hinder SMBs from using such technologies. By purchasing cyber liability insurance, SMBs can protect themselves from potential data breaches and cyberattacks.
