National Flood Safety Awareness Week reminds businesses to protect themselves from flooding

Published:

With National Flood Safety Awareness Week occurring March 12-16, many insurance companies want to remind their customers how to protect a business from the perils created by the natural disaster.

"Insurance coverage is critical," said Mark Green, an insurance professional. "Some consumers mistakenly believe that flood damage is covered by most standard home, renters or commercial insurance policies. National Flood Safety Awareness Week is a reminder for everyone to talk to their local insurance agent before the spring storm season to get information about flood coverage."

Aside from purchasing property insurance to help businesses deal with potential issues caused by floods, a few strategies to combat the rough weather include creating an evacuation plan in case of emergency, making sure a furnace, water heater and other permanent equipment are installed above flood level and inspecting sump pumps to ensure they are working properly.

According to a blog post written by American Rivers, floods create a high number of losses throughout the United States, resulting in $10 billion in losses each year. This high number underscores the importance of insurance coverage that helps deal with flooding.
