Fire at restaurant causes $300,000 in damage

A fire damaged a popular restaurant and displaced employees and nearby residents in San Francisco, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The fire at the Maverick restaurant began in the kitchen, and caused residents who lived in apartments upstairs to evacuate. The city's fire department put out the fire within 30 minutes.

The restaurant will be closed between six months to a year, according to Maverick co-owner Michael Pierce.

"Right now, we're most concerned with our employees," Pierce told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Sixteen Maverick workers are out of a job, though some might be able to work at two restaurants located near the damaged restaurant that were opened by chef-partner Scott Youkilis.

A spokesperson for the fire department said the fire caused $300,000 in damage to the building itself and destroyed $100,000 worth of its contents, the San Francisco Appeal said.

This fire illustrates the need for food service business owners and other professionals in the industry to invest in business insurance. Property insurance covers damage to buildings and other restaurant equipment. This type of insurance also covers other people's property that may be in a business owner's custody or control as well.
