Connecticut small businesses now subject to anti-smoking bill

Published:

A bill under consideration in Connecticut would make it illegal to smoke in any workplace in the state including those with a single self-employed individual working in a rented space, according to the Hartford Courant.

The source says the Public Health Committee of the Connecticut General Assembly approved the bill on March 28, which would extend the ban on smoking in business to include businesses with fewer than five employees. These companies were formerly exempt in the original bill passed in 2003.

"When Connecticut passed the workplace smoking ban in 2003, businesses with less than five employees were exempted as a concession to small businesses who said that this ban would hurt them," Patricia Checko, chairwoman of one of the groups supporting the bill, told the source. "But according to data provided by the Small Business Administration, there are 75,000 employees subjected to smoke in the workplace. We don't see a reason for them to have any less protection than employees of larger companies."

If the bill becomes law, it will create another new regulation that small businesses need to be aware of. Keeping track of regulatory legal changes can be difficult, which is why some small business owners may benefit from business insurance, which can help mitigate legal expenses related to claims against the company.
