Businesses still struggling to recover from storms

While Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee have long since dissipated, The Associated Press says many businesses in the Adirondack and Catskill mountains are still looking to recover ahead of the prime tourist season.

With the heavy rains which swept across much of the East Coast, many businesses sustained significant damage, the news source reports, much of which was covered by their small business insurance coverage.

Complicating the issue is that the storms washed out some roads, making it difficult for potential customers to reach the businesses. Now, ahead of the fall foliage season - the lifeline for many of the businesses - business owners are trying to get the word out that they remain open, reports the AP.

"We're hopeful and optimistic that there will be no effect on the upcoming foliage season," Kimberly Rielly, spokeswoman for the Lake Placid Convention and Visitors Bureau, told the agency.

One of the first major events, the AP reports, the Catskill Mountain Thunder rally, is set to start on schedule, despite the fact that flooding left fish behind at the host resort's bar area. About 10,000 people are expected to attend.
