Businesses of all sizes need to be wary of targeted attacks

Published:

Targeted cyberattacks can affect businesses both large and small, so all firms need to make sure they are taking the appropriate steps to protecting their business critical information.

With a cyberliability insurance policy, businesses can make sure they are not held liable for any information that becomes compromised in the event of a security breach.

According to a recent survey from Symantec, 36 percent of all targeted attacks in the past six months were aimed at small firms, while large businesses claim to have blocked an average of 69 targeted attacks per day over the first half of the year.

“There appears to be a direct correlation between the rise in attacks against smaller businesses and a drop in attacks against larger ones," said Paul Wood, cybersecurity intelligence manager for Symantec. "It almost seems attackers are diverting their resources directly from the one group to the other.”

Businesses also need to be sure to protect their email accounts. The report found nearly 28 percent of email-borne malware contained links to potentially harmful websites that could devastate companies of all sizes.
