Businesses increasingly rewarding employees for taking part in wellness programs

Published:

A healthy staff leads to a more productive workplace, which is why a recent survey from a leading insurance company has found many firms throughout the United States are beginning to give incentives to employees who enroll in health and wellness programs.

According to the research, 84 percent of employers offer incentives to members of their staff who take a health risk questionnaire, while 64 percent of give employees rewards for taking part in biometric screenings.

“Incentives solely tied to participation tend to become entitlement programs, with employees expecting to be rewarded without any sense of accountability for better health," said Jim Winkler, chief innovation officer for health and benefits at an insurance firm. "To truly impact employee behavior change, more and more organizations realize they need to closely tie rewards to outcomes and better results rather than just enrollment.”

United States companies are also giving their employees rewards for making better lifestyle choices. Fifty-eight percent of respondents offer incentives to employees who complete lifestyle modification programs, such as quitting smoking or adopting a healthier diet. With wellness being a more important to firms throughout the United States, they should be sure they are protected with business insurance policies in case one of their programs goes wrong.
