Record number of discrimination cases during 2011 fiscal year

There may have been a record number of employment practices insurance claims over the past 12 months as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission reported a total of 99,947 discriminatory complaints through the end of the fiscal year ending on September 30.

Workplace complaints recorded by the EEOC included charges of race, age, religion, sex, disability and family medical history discrimination. The number of complaints this year represents the most the agency has seen since the Civil Rights Act of 1964, The Los Angeles Times reports.

According to the EEOC, it mediated more than 112,000 cases this year, approximately 8,000 more than it did last year.

"The EEOC's mediation program has been very successful and has contributed to our ability, over the past few years, to better manage our growing inventory and resolve charges in 180 days or fewer," the EEOC said in a statement.

Although employment practices insurance may cover a company in light of a discriminatory charge, it's never assured that the reputability of a company will ever be restored.
